A Delhi court on Wednesday asked the Enforcement Directorate (ED) not to take any coercive action against former union minister P Chidambaram in the Aircel Maxis money-laundering case until next hearing on June 5.
The court’s order came after Chidambaram filed a plea seeking protection from arrest in the Aircel Maxis money-laundering case, in which his son Karti Chidambaram is an accused.
Senior advocates Congress leaders Kapil Sibal and Abhishek Manu Singhvi represented Chidambaram in the court. They urged the court to grant him the relief considering the former minister has clean antecedents.
In his plea, Chidambaram said that the incumbent government has all the documentary evidence in the matter and nothing was to be recovered from him.
However, public prosecutor Nitesh Rana, appearing for the ED, opposed Chidambaram’s plea and said that the former minister failed to join the investigation today (Wednesday), despite summons from the financial probe agency.
The ED had asked Chidambaram to join the probe on Wednesday in foreign investment clearance granted in 2006 to Aircel-Maxis deal when he was finance minister of the country.
