Visitors in Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata have been barred from carrying laptops or tablets at the American centres, starting from May 18 (Thursday).
The US embassy has issued a statement that the restriction on personal electronics will apply to all models of laptops and tablets, including netbooks, Chromebooks, iPads, Kindles, and MacBooks. The reason behind the move is yet to be known.
The visitors will be allowed to carry mobile phones at the centres in New Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata. However, at the Chennai centre, all kinds of electronic devices are already banned.
Moreover, there will be no facility for the visitors to store their devices, the statement added.
