The exchange of the list comes amid tense diplomatic ties between the two countries over the Kashmir issue. This is the 29th consecutive exchange of the list with the first one taking place on January 1, 1992.
The government of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and the Government of the Republic of India agreed on a mutual agreement in 1988 to refrain from undertaking, encouraging or participating in, directly or indirectly, any action aimed at causing the destruction of, or damage to, any nuclear installation or facility in the other country.
According to fas.org report, both India and Pakistan agreed to ‘inform the other on 1st January of each calendar year of the latitude and longitude of its nuclear installations and facilities and whenever there is any change’.
The treaty was drafted in 1988, and signed by the Pakistan PM Benazir Bhutto and Indian PM Rajiv Gandhi on December 21, 1988. It entered into force on January 1991.
This is the 29th consecutive exchange of the list with the first one taking place on January 1, 1992.
