New Delhi:
Andhra Pradesh Assembly on Saturday unanimously passed the Kapu reservation bill to give 5 per cent quota in education and jobs to the community.
However, the 5 per cent quota to Kapus made the total reservation in the state exceed 50 per cent and the state government shall have to wait for Centre’s nod.
Andhra Pradesh CM N Chandrababu Naidu said that his government will ask the Union govt to include the Kapu reservation in schedule 9 so that it would become legitimate.
“We held discussions with leaders of Kapu community. They said they don't need political reservation. Only education and employment reservation is enough. So we proceeded with that,†said CM Naidu.

Reservation to Kapu community was given on the basis of Manjunath Commission report.
Kapu community comprises 27 per cent of the total population and has been demanding reservation for over a decade.
After last year’s violent protests by the community, Chandrababu Naidu govt was under pressure to fulfil its election promise.
The Andhra Pradesh govt also passed another resolution to include Boyas, Valmikis and related sub sects of Andhra Pradesh in Scheduled Tribes and put forth the matter before Centre to provide them reservation accordingly.
