Angry over her triple talaq complaint, a young woman was allegedly burnt alive by her husband and the in-laws in Uttar Pradesh’s Shravasti district. The incident took place on August 16 and came to light after the brother of the victim filed a police complaint. The cops have also registered an FIR in connection with the case. The chilling details of the crime were narrated by none other than the five-year-old daughter of the victim. According to the Times of India report, the victim identified as one Sayeeda had filed a complaint that her husband Nafees had given her triple talaq over phone on August 6.

She went to the police, who in turn summoned the couple and talked to them to resolve the issue. The report added that the cop also advised Sayeeda to stay with her husband. On the fateful day, her daughter saw her father and aunts brutally thrashing Sayeeda. According to the child, her grandparents set her mother on fire. The 22-year-old succumb to her injuries.

Sayeeda's body has been sent for post-mortem. The cops have now registered a case of dowry harassment and murder against the husband and his family. However, no arrests have been made yet, the TOI report said. The officials also said that they will probe why local police did not register a case the first time the victim approached them on August 6 itself.

Last month, President Ram Nath Kovind gave his assent to the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage), Bill, 2019 that made instant triple talaq among Muslims a criminal offence. With his nod, the Bill has become an Act. It will be deemed to have come into force from September 19, 2018. The Bill will replace an ordinance promulgated on February 21 to the same effect.

Meanwhile, on Sunday Union Home Minister Amit Shah said appeasement, which led to the Partition, is the reason for evil practice of triple talaq continuing for so long. Speaking on the 'Abolition of Triple Talaq: Correcting a Historic Wrong' at the Constitution Club in New Delhi on Sunday, Shah said triple talaq was a malpractice, there is no doubt about it in anybody's mind. “Some parties opposed the bill in Parliament but deep inside their heart they knew it was a malpractice that needed to end but they didn't have the courage to do it,” he said.

Shah also defended the law criminalising triple talaq, saying it is going to benefit Muslims, and not other communities. Coming down heavily on the Congress, he said the party has "no shame" and continues to oppose the law on triple talaq.
