An Army officer died in a road accident while leading a convoy of vehicles in Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir.
"Major L Rambo Singh laid down his life while performing operational duties in extreme harsh climate and rough mountainous terrain of eastern Ladakh while upholding the finest traditions of the Indian Army," a defence spokesman said.
The spokesman did not elaborate on the circumstances that led to Singh's death yesterday but sources said his vehicle skid off the road and fell into a deep gorge.
He was "martyred" while leading a convoy of vehicles carrying operational stores from Tangtse to Karu in extremely inhospitable terrain, he said.
The army official is survived by wife O Surmala Chanu and a three-year old son Neo Lairenlakpam, the spokesman said.
