An Indian Army Major was arrested by Delhi Police on Sunday in connection with the murder of his colleague Major Amit Dwivedi's wife Shailja in New Delhi.
The police arrested Major Nikhil Handa, who was seen with the victim hours before she went missing from the Army Base Hospital in Delhi Cantonment area, from Uttar Pradesh’s Meerut.
According to the police, Handa and Shailja had an affair since 2015 and he killed her after she refused to marry him.
"When we checked call records, we found that there were numerous calls made from Major Handa's number to the Major Dwivedi's wife," DCP (West) Vijay Kumar said.
"Major Handa pressurised the woman for marriage and was very obsessive towards her," he added.
Early on Saturday, thirty-year-old Shailja Dwivedi was found dead with her throat slit in Delhi Cantonment area. Shailja had gone for a physiotherapy session at the Army Base Hospital in Delhi Cantonment at around 10 am. From the hospital, she went with Handa and around 1:30 pm, police found her body in a street in the Cantonment area.
Handa, who is currently posted in Nagaland's Dimapur, came to Delhi on Saturday to meet Shailja. Police had said that she was run over by a car after slitting her throat to make the incident look like an accident.
Major Handa and Shailja were friends and knew each other for a long time. Shailja's husband Major Dwivedi was posted in Nagaland. However, she shifted to Delhi after her husband was transferred.
