The floods in Assam have claimed lives of 124 animals including nine one-horn rhinos and around 130 were injured in Kaziranga National Park (KNP).

KNP divisional forest officer Rohini Ballav Saikia on Friday informed the media that the flood waters had submerged 85% of the national park.

The official also added that 17 animals including 11 hog deer, two swam deer, one wild car, two snakes and a porcupine were killed after being hit by speeding vehicles on the NH-37.

The forest officials managed to save 125 hog deer, four swamp deer and one rhino cub from flood prone areas, residential areas.

“The rescued animals are under medical treatment,” said Saikia.

The forest officials to save the wild animals had kept 200 highlands ready for the animals to take shelter as flood-waters rose.

However, several highlands made by the KNP officials got submerged by rising waters of Brahmaputra and Difloo rivers for couple of weeks.
