New Delhi:

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) is set to organise protest rallies across the state of West Bengal on Friday to protest against the ‘brutal killings’ of five people in Assam. A total of five people were shot dead while two others were left injured by gunmen at Kheronibari in Assam’s Tinsukia district on Thursday.

“In protest against the brutal killings in Assam @AITCofficial will organise protest rallies tomorrow ( Fri Nov 2) in different parts of north and south Bengal including Siliguri and Kolkata,” West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC Chief Mamata Banerjee declared in a tweet on Thursday.

TMC youth Congress chief and MP Abhishek Banerjee will head one of the protest rallies from Jadavpur 8B bus stand to Hazra crossing in South Kolkata.

The Kolkata protest rally will begin from 8B Bus Stand, Jadavpur and would congregate at Hazra, MP Derek O' Brien tweeted.

“Trinamool to hold protest marches across Bengal today, Fri Nov 2. Will take part in one of the #Kolkata protests to be led by @abhishekaitc Assemble at 8B Bus Stand from 1pm onward. March to Hazra,” Derek O’ Brien’s tweet read.

Meanwhile, TMC Chief Mamata Banerjee in a Twitter post on Thursday, wondered if the attack was related to the recent developments and controversies around the National Register of Citizens (NRC).

“Is this the outcome of recent NRC development,” she had questioned.

“Terrible news coming out of Assam. We strongly condemn the brutal attack in Tinsukia... We have no words to express our deep sorrow to the grieving families. The perpetrators must be punished at the very earliest,” she added.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh also took to Twitter to demand instant action against the perpetrators

“Deeply anguished by civilian casualties in an attack in Upper Assam region. It is a reprehensible act of mindless violence. Spoke to Assam CM Shri @sarbanandsonwa regarding the incident and asked him to take strict possible action against the perpetrators of this heinous crime,” he tweeted.

Meanwhile to protest against the incident, the All India Trinamool Congress have turned their Twitter account to black.

At least five people were brutally killed by alleged ULFA (I) gunmen in Tinsukia district of Assam, causing Mamata Banerjee to link the incident with the NRC developments in the state.

However, ULFA (I), in a press release, have claimed that they were not behind the killings in Assam on Thursday.

"We, the United Liveration Front of Asom (Independent) would like to make it clear to all concern authorities that our organisation does not have any involvement in the firing incident that occurred on 1 November, 2018 at Sadiya SAikhowaghat in Tinsukia District," the statement read.
