In a bid to identify the illegal Bangladeshi migrants, the government on Monday released the second and final draft of Assam's National Register of Citizens (NRC), mandated by the Supreme Court.

Its been a quite long that an unanswered question has been mongering across Assam, raising significant doubts over the citizenship of people living in the state. It seems like the decade-old mystery is closer to the solution as NRC features the names, addresses and photographs of all Indian citizens, living in the north-eastern state before March 25, 1971.

A large number of security-personnel have been deployed in Assam ahead of NRC release in all the NRC Sewa Kendras (NSK) at 10 am across the state. Deputy commissioners and SPs are also directed to maintain a strict vigil, anticipating a breakdown of law and order in the state.

Though the new NRC list will successfully weed out illegal immigrants from Assam, there is also a threat to the "genuine citizens" in the state. With no clear estimate of how many people will be able to make it to the list, several citizens are fearing a throw out from the draft.

Here are the Highlights on Assam's National Register of Citizens (NRC):

# 16:04 pm: Assam is a very peaceful state and we are confident that all sections of society will come forward to maintain peace and tranquillity in the time to come. We will always abide by the direction of Supreme Court: Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal.

# 14:20 pm: Home Ministry categorically said that government has no role in it, the entire process was carried out under SC's direction. The draft is not final, people can still file their claims. Opposition particularly Congress is trying to politicise the issue: MoS PMO Jitendra Singh.

# 13:26 pm: I will also try to go to Assam, my MPs are already going. Let's see if they are restricted or not: Mamata Banerjee says on NCR Assam.

# 13:19 pm: Where will the 40 lakh people whose names have been deleted go? Does Centre have any rehabilitation program for them? Ultimately it is Bengal which will suffer. Its just vote politics by BJP. Request Home Minister to bring an amendment - says the West Bengal chief minister.

# 13:15 pm: People are being isolated through a game plan. We are worried because people are being made refugees in their own country. Its a plan to throw out Bengali speaking people and Biharis. Consequences will be felt in our state also: Mamata Banerjee.

# 13:05 pm: There were people who have Aaadhar cards and passports but still their names are not in the draft list. Names of people were removed on the basis of surnames also. Is the Government trying to do forceful eviction? - West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

# 12:24 pm: I am very happy and relieved, my name and the names of my family members have been included in the draft list: Rinju Hussain, local on NRC Assam draft list.

# 12:21 pm: I want to ask the Opposition, what is the Centre's role in this? It is happening under the supervision of the Supreme Court. Such sensitive issues should not be politicized: Rajnath Singh in Lok Sabha on NRC Assam.

# 12:13 pm: People checking their names on the draft list at a National Register of Citizens Centre in Guwahati. Out of 3.29 crore people, names of around 40 lakh people were found to be ineligible.

# 11:45 am: Central Government has intentionally eliminated more than 40 lakh religious and linguistic minorities from NRC (National Register of Citizens) which will have serious ramifications on the demography of different states adjoining Assam, PM Narendra Modi should come to the house and clarify it: Sougata Roy, TMC.

# 11:19 am: 40 lakh names ineligible is a very high figure and very surprising. There are a lot of irregularities in the report. We will raise this issue with the Government and in the Parliament. The political motive of BJP is also behind this: Ripun Bora, Assam Congress.

# 11:15 am: Even someone whose name is not in the final list can approach the foreigners' tribunal. No coercive action will be taken against anyone, hence there is no need for anyone to panic, says Rajnath Singh.

# 11:10 am: Some people are unnecessarily trying to create an atmosphere of fear. This is a completely impartial report. No misinformation should be spread. This is a draft and not the final list: Rajnath Singh.

# 10:24 am: Every person whose name was in the first .draft but is missing from the final draft will be given an individual letter to file a claim for her/his non-inclusion during claims and objections: Sailesh, Registrar General.

# 10:19 am: Based on this draft there is no question of any reference to Foreigners Tribunal or any person being taken to the detention centre: Satyendra Garg Joint Secretary (North East).

# 10:06 am: This is just a draft and not the final list. The people who are not included can make claims and objections: State NRC Coordinator.

# 10:00 am: Two crore eighty-nine lakhs, eighty-three thousand six hundred and seventy-seven people have been found eligible to be included in the National Register of Citizens: State NRC Coordinator.

# 09:54 am: National Register of Citizens draft released Assam.

In case a person's name does not appear in the draft, they should apply in prescribed forms in their respective NSKs. These forms will be available from August 7 to September 28.

The next step will be to file the claim in another prescribed form which will be available from August 30 to September 28. These claims will be finally disposed of after proper hearings. The concerned authorities will also inform citizens the reason for their names being left out.

The All Assam Students' Union (AASU) has also taken a special initiative to set up a 24-hour control room in order to help and inform people regarding the same.

The NRC is being updated under the Supreme Court supervision with March 24, 1971, as the cut-off date for genuine Indian citizens in Assam.

The first draft of the ongoing NRC process was released at the midnight of December 31, 2017. It comprised 1.9 crore names out of the total application of 3.29 crore people in Assam.
