Trouble found TMC chief Mamata Banerjee after Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Parishad on Wednesday lodged an FIR at Assam's Lakhimpur Sadar Police Station against the West Bengal chief minister over her remarks on the publication of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) draft in Assam.

"Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Parishad has lodged an FIR at Assam's Lakhimpur Sadar Police Station against West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee over her remarks on NRC," the news agency ANI reported.

Establishing the truth, Ghana Kanta Bhuyan, the officer in charge of the North Lakhimpur police station said, "We have registered a case against her after complaints from a local organisation".

The FIR has been registered under laws dealing with criminal conspiracy and promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, or residence.

“Her statement on the NRC after she met home minister Rajanath Singh in Delhi could vitiate the atmosphere here (Assam) and lead to tensions between groups,” Sudipta Hazarika, general secretary of the Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Parishad stated.

“She is trying to provoke Biharis and the Bengalis against the Assamese through her statements. Her statements are against the sentiments of the Assamese people,” Hazarika added.

The publication of National Register of Citizens (NRC) draft has given birth to yet another hot political potato in Assam and the opposition parties, especially Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress is leaving no-stone-unturned to corner the ruling BJP over the matter.

The elimination of over 40 lakh people, mostly Bengali-speaking Muslims and Hindus from the Assam NRC draft has been taking the entire nation by storm. The TMC chief is also gearing up to send an eight-member delegation in Assam and will take stock of the situation and meet those who have been left out of the NRC draft.

Earlier on Tuesday, the West Bengal CM sparked another controversy after she said the NRC could lead to a “bloodbath and a civil war in the country”.

Following her 'civil war' remark Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) an FIR against Banerjee and accused her of encouraging ‘hate and tension’ among the existing communities with an aim to disrupt the NRC update exercise
