Counting of votes for 10 Assembly seats - Jokihat (Bihar), Gomia and Silli (Jharkhand), Chengannur (Kerala), Ampati (Meghalaya), Shakot (Punjab), Tharali (Uttarakhand), Noorpur (Uttar Pradesh), Palus-Kadegaon (Maharashtra) and Mahestala (West Bengal) – where by-elections were held on May 28, is underway.
The results of all these Assembly bypolls will be crucial in an elections year. With Assembly elections in three states – Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh – later this year, the BJP would like to win as many seats as it could to set the momentum.
The counting of votes is also underway in Karnataka's Rajarajeshwari Nagar Assembly constituency, where elections were countermanded over the fake voter ID cards issue.
The Opposition parties will also be watching the results closely as victory will boost their morale ahead of several crucial elections lined up.
