Assembly elections 2017: Exit polls indicate Congress struggling for breath in Indian states

New Delhi:

Indian National Congress seems to be struggling to find its space not only at the Centre but in states as well. The poll of all exit polls for Assembly elections 2017, issued on March 9, indicate that the Congress may not be able save face in four of the five states, including it’s traditional bastion Manipur. 

According to exit polls, Congress is facing dwindled share base in Uttarakhand, Goa, Manipur and Uttar Pradesh. The only state where the party is likely to make a comeback is Punjab. However, even in a state where anti-incumbency against SAD-BJP is at peak, Congress may not b able to make a clean sweep as Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Adami Party is giving it a tough completion.

The exit polls have been kind to Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Bhartiya Janta Party. The predictions say that the demonetisation has not created any resistance the ‘Modi-wave’, as expected by the pundits.

UP Polls

News 24-Chanakya and India Today-Axis have predicted massive Modi wave in UP as according to them BJP will clinch 280 plus seats. The NewsX -MRC poll gave the BJP 185 seats, the Samajwadi Party-Congress alliance 120 and the Bahujan Samaj Party 90.The Times Now-VMR poll gave the BJP between 190 and 210 seats, the SP-Congress combine between 110 and 130 seats and the BSP between 57 and 74 seats. The ABP-CSDS poll gave the BJP 164-176 seats, the SP-Congress 155-169 and the BSP 60-72 seats. The IndiaTV-CVoter polls forecast 155-167 seats to the BJP, 135-147 to the SP-Congress and 81-93 to the BSP.

Uttarakhand Polls

The BJP and the Congress are projected to finish neck and neck with 32 seats each in the 70-member assembly. According to ABP’s exit poll projects BJP will emerge as largest party with 34-42 seats whereas Congress is predicted to get 23-29 seats. The India Today/Axis exit poll predicts BJP will win 46-53 seats and Congress 12-21.News 24-Chanakya is giving BJP 53 seats and Congress 15. BJP and Congress both are predicted to win same no of seats (29-35) according to India Tv-C Voter.

Punjab Polls

All the exit polls for Punjab show the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) making significant inroads into Punjab but they aren’t in agreement over whether the Congress or AAP will win more seats. The magic number in Punjab is 59. CVoter predicts AAP winning between 59 and 67 seats in the 117-strong Assembly. The India Today/Axis exit poll predicts the Congress will win between 62 and 71 seats and AAP wlil get between 42 and 51 seats. The SAD-BJP alliance is expected to languish between 4 and 7 seats.

The India News/MRC poll puts the Congress and AAP neck and neck at 55 seats each. This poll gives SAD-BJP 7 seats.

Goa Polls

CVoter exit poll predicts a close-fought battle between the Congress and the BJP to gain control of Goa, with both parties unlikely to gain a clear majority in the 40-member state assembly. Axis exit poll’s prediction is cautiously hopeful of BJP coming back to power, bagging 18 to 22 seats. It estimates Congress will get between 9 and 13 seats, while AAP is predicted to be at the bottom of the table, with a maximum of two seats.

Manipur Polls

Axis poll now predicts Congress victory as party may win 30-36 seats and BJP is predicted to be limited 16-22. CVoter exit poll has projected BJP as the largest party in Manipur elections, winning 28 seats. Congress is projected to be winning 20 seats in the state while Others are expected to win close to 12 seats.
