The BJP and its ally IPFT on Saturday ended the Left Front's 25-year-rule in Tripura with a strong showing in the Assembly polls, while Meghalaya threw a hung House.
The BJP secured a majority on its own by winning 35 seats while its ally IPFT won 8 assembly constituencies. The CPI (M), who has been ruling the state for the last 25 years reduced to 16 seats.
In Nagaland, the BJP and its electoral ally NDPP bagged 27 seats in the 60-member Assembly with the saffron party exuding confidence of forming the government in the state.
The ruling Naga People's Front (NPF) also secured 27 seats, running neck and neck with the BJP-NDPP combine.
According to EC sources, the BJP secured 11 seats while its alliance partner the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) got 16 seats.
Expressing confidence about forming the government in the state with poll ally NDPP and some smaller parties, Union minister Kiren Rijiju said "We have 29 seats and need only two more. There are letters of support coming from smaller parties."
Meghalaya, however, thrown a fractured mandate with ruling Congres emerging the single largest party after winning 21 seats.
Assembly Election 2018: Congress single largest party in Meghalaya, to stake claim to form govt
The Assembly Elections were conducted on February 18 in Tripura, while Meghalaya and Nagaland underwent the polls on February 27. Polling for 59 out of 60 seats was conducted in all the three North-Eastern states.
In Tripura, a CPI(M) candidate died, while in Meghalaya, a Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) member was killed, and in Nagaland, the chief of Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP), Neiphiu Rio, was declared elected unopposed, resulting in countermanding one seat of the constituency in Tripura and Meghalaya to 59 from 60, while keeping the seats to 60 in Nagaland.
The BJP, which has already formed its government in Assam, Manipur, and Arunachal Pradesh, is eyeing a big time to expand its footprints on these three states too.
