Atal Bihari Vajpayee stable now; will be in hospital till 'infection is controlled'

BJP stalwart and former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who was admitted to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi, for a routine check-up on Monday, is fine now and on injectable antibiotics, according to the latest medical bulletin, released by the doctors.

"He is fine, there is nothing to worry," Union Minister Harsh Vardhan told reporters after paying a visit to the BJP veteran on Monday.

Meanwhile, an official statement, released by the hospital authority stated, the former prime minister "has been diagnosed with a urinary tract infection for which appropriate treatment has been closely monitored and treated by a team of doctor".

Therefore, Vajpayee would be going through a series of medical tests and will remain in hospital until the "infection is controlled", doctors said on Tuesday.

Following his admission to Delhi AIIMS, high profile politicians, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress president Rahul Gandhi, Home Minister Rajnath Singh, and senior BJP leader LK Advani rushed to the hospital on Monday. The Prime Minister was at AIIMS for about 50 minutes and also met Vajpayee's family members to inquire about his well-being.

On Tuesday, former prime minister Manmohan Singh also visited AIIMS, Delhi and asked about his current state of health.

According to sources, the 93-year-old politician is currently in the VIP coronary care unit. Randeep Guleria, who was Vajpayee's personal physician for decades, is closely monitoring his treatment.

Vajpayee, who was the first non-Congress prime minister to complete a five-year tenure, stepped away from politics in 2009. As his health deteriorated, he slowly withdrew himself from public life and has been confined to his Delhi residence. The BJP leader ruled the country for 13 days in 1996, 13 months in 1998 and for almost six years from 1999.
