New Delhi:

Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad on Tuesday questioned newly-elected President Ram Nath Kovind’s speech in the Parliament.

Azad said that the President, in his speech, took names many leaders who contributed to India’s freedom, but failed to take name of first Prime Minister JL Nehru and other Congress leaders.

Azad said that Kovind is no more a BJP candidate and hence he should have taken name of first PM. He called it unfortunate.

"President took names of JL Nehru's ministers, didn't mention first PM's name even once, this is unfortunate, he is no more BJP candidate," said Azad.

It is to be noted that the President took names of Rajendra Prasad, S Radhakrishnan, APJ Abdul Kalam, Pranab Mukherjee, Sardar Patel, Bhimrao Ambedkar, Mahatma Gandhi and Deen Dayal Upadhyay in his inaugural speech.

Replying to Azad's statement, BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said that it is fortunate that Ram Nath Kovind is our President. He said that the President’s inaugural speech was inclusive and by pressurising him to take name of JL Nehru is an attempt to demean him.

"Pandit Nehru was a big leader but forcing to mention him in all speeches. Is Congress trying to undermine his personality?" said Ravi Shankar Prasad.

Prasad questioned that why Congress party had demeaned Sardar Patel? Prasad added that if Narsimha Raoi would not have bestowed Bharat Ratna to him then Atal Bihari Vajpayee would have given it.

Prasad said that if President has taken name of Deen Dayal Upadhyay on this day then then it is a proud moment and politics should not be played on all issues.
