Just as the banks started rolling out new high-denomination currency notes on Thursday, people in Delhi proudly posed for photos with their prized possession. 

Two Delhi residents Rajnish and Ahmad told India news that they feel relieved to get the new currency from their bank.

In an unprecedent move, the Narendra Modi government had discontinued 500 and 1,000 rupee notes on Tuesday with effect from midnight.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi made an announcement on Tuesday night that Rs 500 and Rs 1000 currency notes will be discontinued. However, in his televised address to the nation, Modi assured the common people that their money remains safe.

PM Modi also announced that there will be a 50-day window from November 10 to December 30 during which people can deposit old notes in their bank and post office accounts to have them exchanged with the new currency.
