New Delhi:

As soon as the apex court begins hearing on the controversial triple talaq, the vice-president of All India Muslim Personal Law Board Maulana Syed Jalaluddin Umari Thursday said banning triple talaq will “not benefit” Muslim women.

“Even if triple talaq is outlawed, those who want to trouble their wives will still continue to do so and stop giving conjugal rights to their wives. This will lead to many complications and jeopardize the woman’s stature and dignity,” PTI quoted him as saying.

Umari, who is also the president of Islamic forum Jamaat-e-Islami Hind (JIH) reiterated that the problem of divorced Muslim women has been “blown out of proportion and statistics don’t support the claim of this problem being endemic within the Muslim community”.

The Supreme Court on Thursday made clear that it will not hear polygamy issue in the triple talaq case. The Apex Court began hearing on a batch of pleas challenging the constitutional validity of 'triple talaq' and 'nikah halala'.

The court said that the arguments on Triple Talaq will continue for six days and allotted two-day to each party to submit their arguments while the single day is allotted to both parties to reply questions of either side.

Triple talaq is an instant divorce practice in Muslims and India is among the hand of countries where it still exists. The practice authorizes men to instantly divorce their wives by saying “talaq” (divorce) thrice in a row.

Prime Minister Modi is also in favor of banning this “inhuman” practice that destroys lives of many women every day as Muslim men continue to divorce their wives instantly through messages, phone calls and even by Facebook and WhatsApp in some instances.
