A look at the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) shows crime against women has increased by more than 200 percent over the last two decades, with rape incidents listing the top in offence chart.

A look at the National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) shows crime against women has increased by more than 200 percent over the last two decades, with rape incidents listing the top in offence chart.

According to National Crime Record Bureau (NCRB) data in 2001 143795 incidents — rape, kidnapping and abduction, dowry deaths, assault on women with intent to outrage her modesty, insult to modesty of women, cruelty by husband or relative, importation of girls from foreign countries, immoral traffic act, dowry prohibition act, indecent representation of woman and Sati — were registered.

While, 327394 cases of crime against women have been registered in 2015.

The NCRB is yet to release the crime figures for 2016.

The whole country went on rage and massive protest rallies were taken out across the country by commoners to protest brutal murder and rape of Nirbhaya in December 2012. The agitations forced the government to bring in stringent laws.

However, in spite of forcing in stringent laws rate of crime against women divided by total women population has gone up from 41.7 to 53.9 percent between 2012 and 2015.

In 2001 total rape cases reported were 16075 and 14645 kidnapping cases were reported, While, in 2015 16075 rape cases and 59277 kidnapping cases have been reported in 2015.

Cruelty by husband and relatives in 2015 accounted for 34 percent of the total cases, rising 6 percent over the last four years, from 106,527 cases in 2012 to 113,403 in 2015.

Senior police officers across the country state that the number of cases have increased because the women of the country are becoming aware of their rights.
