Kolkata:

In the wake of the agitation in Haryana over quota, RSS supremo Mohan Bhagwat today suggested that a non-political committee should be formed to decide on the eligibility for reservation.

“Many people are demanding reservation. I feel a committee should be formed to decide who are eligible for reservation.  The committee should be apolitical so that there are no vested interests,” Bhagwat told an interactive session of a Chamber of Commerce here.

“Which section of the society should be brought forward, for how long they should be given reservation - a time bound program should be chalked out regarding it. The committee should be given powers for execution,” he said.

Bhagwat said a person not getting opportunity only because of his birth in a particular caste should not happen.

“There should be level playing field for everybody in the society. Everybody should get equal opportunities,” Bhagwat said when asked what would be his solution to the problem of reservation.

“But only because of someone’s birth a person does not get the opportunity - this should not be the case. As long as this problem prevails this situation (reservation) will be there,” he said.

Bhagwat said after Independence, B R Ambedkar had stressed on economic independence and independence from social discrimination and said as long as the latter existed there would be the issue of reservation.

“As we live in the city, we may not be aware but this problem of social discrimination still exists. There should be a level playing field for everybody in terms of opportunities.  We feel there should not be any social discrimination in the society,” he said.

Bhagwat’s comment’s comes in the backdrop of the Centre announcing the setting up of a committee under Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister M Venkaiah Naidu to examine the quota demand by the Jat community in government jobs.

On Hindus and Minority

He also spoke on the majority and minority issue.

Hindus will never be a minority in this country and steps should be taken to bring back those who were once Hindus, RSS supremo Mohan Bhagwat said today.

“Hindus will have to tackle this problem themselves. The pessimism that Hindus will become minority in a matter of time should go. In this matter of time, we can do something that this thing does not happen.

“Hindus, who are a majority in the over 120 crore population will never become a minority. Hindus will always be in majority. And whatever you see (population) today, it is going to increase in days to come,” Bhagwat said in an interactive session of a Chamber of Commerce here.

“Those who are Hindus will remain so. And those who were once Hindus... if the top (dhakkan) of the hardliners is removed, then at least 50 per cent of them will come back.

“So those who have gone, we should bring them back, not by greed or coercion but through love and affection,” he said when asked.

Referring to Assam, Bhagwat said RSS has been talking about demographic changes to the state for the past several years.

“We have been talking about demographic changes in Assam even from the time when none of the swayamsevaks were members of gram panchayats. Earlier, the people of Assam themselves were not aware of the demographic problem, but now they are aware of it because of the awareness created by RSS.

“Very soon you will witness a new situation in Assam,” he said but did not elaborate.
