The security was beefed up, internet suspended and schools shut in various parts of the country in wake of the Bharat Bandh called by several groups against caste-based reservation in jobs and education.
At least 12 people injured in Bihar's Arrah district after clashes erupted between two groups during the nationwide Bharat Bandh called by several social media groups on Tuesday.
Curfew was imposed in Madhya Pradesh's Morena and Bhind, while schools remained shut in Uttar Pradesh's Firozabad. Internet services were also suspended in Jaipur and Alwar district of Rajasthan.
The shutdown calls were being circulated only on social media and no major group came forward to make it official.
The bandh was also aimed to protest the violence during the similar nationwide shutdown called by Dalit organisations on April 2 against the alleged dilution of SC/ST Atrocities Act.
“The Home Ministry has advised states to raise security and make appropriate arrangements, including prohibitory orders if necessary, to prevent any untoward incident,” an official said.
The ministry asked all the states, particularly Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan where large-scale violence erupted on April 2, to enhance patrolling in sensitive areas.
