The Maharashtra government on Wednesday moved the Supreme Court (SC) against the release of activist Gautam Navlakha in connection with the Bhima-Koregaon case. Earlier, the Delhi High Court set aside his transit remand and ended his house arrest. The Maharashtra government will seek an immediate stay on the order and will mention the case in front of the newly sworn-in Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi.
The Delhi High Court said Navlakha's detention had exceeded 24 hours which was "untenable".

Gautam Navlakha along with other four activists were arrested from different parts of the country in relation to the Bhima-Koregaon case.
"I wish to thank the majority and dissenting Justices of the Supreme Court for their judgment, which allowed us four weeks to seek relief in this matter, and the public-spirited citizens & lawyers of India for putting up a spirited fight on our behalf, whose memory I will cherish. I am humbled by the solidarity, which crossed borders, rallying in our support. From Delhi High Court I have won my freedom. It thrills me no end," activist Gautam Navlakha had stated in a statement after his release.
On August 28, the Maharashtra police had arrested five activists in connection with a First Information Report (FIR) lodged following ‘Elgaar Parishad’ conclave which was held on December 31, 2017. As per reports, the conclave had allegedly triggered extreme violence at Koregaon-Bhima village of Maharashtra.
Arun Ferreira, Varavara Rao, Sudha Bharadwaj, Vernon Gonsalves, and Gautam Navlakha were the five activists put under house arrest on August 29 after a Supreme Court order against the police action.
