New Delhi:

Hours after the Supreme Court refused to interfere in the arrest of five right activists in Bhima-Koregaon violence, BJP president Amit Shah launched a scathing attack on Congress chief Rahul Gandhi for supporting "Maoists, fake activists and corrupt elements" of the society.

Training his gun at the Gandhi scion, Shah took to Twitter and said, "There is only one place for idiocy and it's called the Congress. Support ‘Bharat Ke Tukde Tukde Gang’, Maoists, fake activists and corrupt elements".

"Defame all those who are honest and working. Welcome to Rahul Gandhi’s Congress. #BhimaKoregaon," the BJP president wrote.

Shah was replying to one of Gandhi's month-old tweet, which came on the heels of activists Varavara Rao, Arun Ferreira, Vernon Gonsalves, Sudha Bharadwaj and Gautam Navlakha's arrest in a coordinated raid by Maharashtra Police across India.

Coming down heavily on the Narendra Modi government, Gandhi had on August 28 tweeted, "There is only place for one NGO in India and it's called the RSS. Shut down all other NGOs. Jail all activists and shoot those that complain".

"Welcome to the new India. #BhimaKoregaon," the Congress chief reiterated.

Meanwhile, welcoming the Supreme Court's verdict on activists' arrest, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said, "They were attempting to trigger a civil war in the country. They were trying to shield the Naxals and to kill PM Modi. Now everything is being revealed".

Early in the day, the Supreme Court refused to interfere in the arrest of five rights activists and declined to appoint a SIT for a probe into their arrest. The three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra, in a 2:1 verdict, refused the plea seeking the immediate release of the activists.

"Today’s verdict by SC vindicates our stand against urban Maoists. In fact, this was absolutely a conspiracy against the nation. SC pointed out that it's not a political conspiracy. SC also appreciated that state govt or GoI isn't trying to curb dissenting voice," Fadnavis added.

The Maharashtra police arrested the activists in connection with an FIR lodged following a conclave - 'Elgaar Parishad' - held on December 31 last year that had later triggered violence at Bhima-Koregaon village in the state.
