Police lathicharge on students protesting at Banaras Hindu University (BHU) has drawn criticisms across the country. Senior JD(U) leader Sharad Yadav on Sunday came in support of the students and condemned the police act.Â
The JD(U) leader tweeted, "Lathi charged on girls and students of BHU is highly condemnable as it is sheer banning of freedom of expression and speech & never happened."
Yadav said that the police's action of lathicharge on girl students is highly condemnable and said the issue will be raised in Parliament.
The trigger happened when a female student of the arts faculty on her way to the hostel was teased and harrassed by three men who were bike borne and latter fled.Â
An instant violent clash between the students and the police officials occured which injured several from both sides. The university have announced holliday from September 25 till October

"It has never happened before at BHU. It is sheer violation of freedom of speech and expression guaranteed by the Constitution," Yadav said in a statement.
"We will raise the issue in Parliament... It is intolerable in a democracy and the government shouldapologise," he said, adding people will take to the streets to protest it. BHU, however, said the protest by the students was "politically motivated" to malign the image of the university.
