Officials of Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) have imposed Rs 50,000 fine each on at least 54 second-year students including female for ragging their juniors.

Officials of Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) have imposed Rs 50,000 fine each on at least 54 second-year students including female for ragging their juniors.

Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital is located in Bihar's Darbhanga city. The ragging incident at the girl’s hostel of the medical college came to surface after a first-year-student of the DMCH reported the happening to the Medical Council of India (MCI).

Nodal officer of anti-ragging committee of DMCH Radharaman Prasad said, “Monetary fine ranging from Rs 25,000 to one lakh have been imposed on the entire batch with the deadline of November 25.”

He added that the fined medical students included first-year and second-year student of the college. “We have informed the guardians about the incident. Stern actions would be taken against students who fail to pay the fine by the stipulated deadline.”

The college authorities took the action after its Anti-Ragging Committee submitted a report. The Committee was formed on a directive of the Medical Council of India (MCI).

According to officials of the medical college the seniors have been fined for their alleged involvement in ragging, while first-year students have been financially punished for refusing to identify the perpetrators.

DMCH officials added, the a first-year student living in the college hostel directly registered her complaint with the MCI. “On November 16 the MCI directed the college to take action on the alleged ragging incident.”

Till the time report was filed no official complaint was made with the local police station.
