Bihar courts reject ex-minister Manju Verma, her husband’s anticipatory bail pleas in Arms Act case

Two separate courts in Bihar’s Begusarai on Saturday rejected the anticipatory bail pleas of JD-U leader and former social welfare minister Manju Verma and her husband Chandrashekhar Verma in Arms Act case.

The minister and her husband were booked under Arms Act after CBI recovered live cartridges from her in-laws' residence during a raid in connection with the Muzaffarpur shelter home rape case.

Verma’s plea was rejected by the district court, while that of her husband was turned down by the Additional District and Sessions.

Advocates appearing for Verma and her husband argued for the anticipatory bail to the couple saying that they live in Patna and rarely visit the house in Begusarai from where the CBI recovered 50 cartridges.

The advocates said that they house was a joint property of the family and their clients didn’t know from where the cartridges came to the house.

The defence counsel opposed the pleas and said that the couple used to frequently visit the house, therefor, can’t be granted anticipatory bail on this ground.

Manju Verma had resigned as social welfare minister following a disclosure that her husband Chandrashekhar Verma had spoken to the prime accused in the scandal, Brajesh Thakur, 17 times between January and June this year.

The Opposition RJD also alleged that Chandrashekhar had close links with key accused Thakur and he used to visit the shelter home quite frequently.

The mass rape case came to light two months ago following a social audit report submitted by the Mumbai-based Tata Institute of Social Sciences which mentioned sexual abuse of girls lodged at the Muzaffarpur shelter home.
