Baccha Rai, the main accused in the Bihar topper scam that had rocked the state in 2016, has been granted bail by the Patna High Court on Wednesday. The scam came to limelight after arts category topper Ruby Rai, a student of Vishun Roy College in Vaishali district, had failed to answer basic questions. She had even described political science as prodigal science that taught cooking.
Baccha Rai has been granted bail for three months for treatment of serious illness.
Rai, alias Amit Kumar, was granted bail by Justice Virendra Kumar after his lawyer presented a comprehensive medical report indicating serious ailments and prayed for the bail for his treatment. Rai has been directed by the court to surrender before the lower court after the end of the three months bail period.
Rai was put behind bars in June 2016 after his name emerged in the Bihar toppers scam. Later, Enforcement Directorate had attached has assets worth Rs 4.53 crore, including 29 plots and deposits in ten bank accounts. Bank deposits in the name of his daughter Shalini Rai, a flat in Patna and a two-storey house in Hajipur of the Rai family were also attached.
The ED had registered a money laundering case to probe alleged irregularities in this case, related to the state school examination board, taking cognisance of Bihar Police FIR and the findings of the Special Investigation Team (SIT) constituted to probe the scam.
