New Delhi:

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi has been elected to the Rajya Sabha in the Uttar Pradesh bypolls. He will fill the seat which fell vacant following the death of former Union minister Arun Jaitley.

Jaitley, who died in August, was elected in 2018 and his tenure was till 2024.

This marks the debut of Trivedi, who is equally conversant with Hindi as well as English, in Parliament after being associated with the BJP for a long period.

His win was all but certain due to the strong majority the Bharatiya Janata Party enjoys in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly.

Earlier, Trivedi filed his nomination papers in three sets on October 5. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Deputy Chief Minister Dinesh Sharma and other senior leaders and ministers were present during the filing of nomination.

Meanwhile, BJP nominee Satish Chandra Dubey has also been elected unopposed for the lone seat of Rajya Sabha by-poll in Bihar. He was the only candidate to file nomination papers on Friday, the last day for submitting papers.

The bypoll has been necessitated by the death of renowned lawyer and former Union minister Ram Jethmalani.

Dubey, who had represented the Valmiki Nagar in the previous Lok Sabha, was accompanied by Deputy CM Sushil Modi, Bihar BJP vice president Devesh Kumar, JDU ministers Shrawan Kumar and Nand Kishore Yadav.
