New Delhi:
A BJP leader has filed a Public interest litigation (PIL) in the Supreme Court seeking minority status for Hindus in eight states where the number of the community has fallen down.
One Ashwani Kumar Upadhyay, a Delhi BJP leader and an advocate by profession has filed the PIL giving reference to Census 2011.
PIL filed by the Upadhyay states, “According to the report of Census 2011, Hindus are minority in eight states including Punjab (38.40%), Manipur (31.30%), Jammu and Kashmir (28.44%), Lakshadweep (2.5%), Mizoram (2.75%), Nagaland (8.75%), Meghalaya (11.53%) and Arunachal Pradesh (29%).”
The PIL further states that the Hindu population in the state are unable to their rights due the majority population. Upadhyay has prayed to declare Hindus minority in the eight states.
According to the details provided in the PIL, Lakshadweep has total population of 64473 (Muslims - 62,268 and Hindus - 1788), Mizoram has total population of 1,097,206, ( Christians - 956,331, Hindus - 30,136), Nagaland has total population of 1978502 ( Christians - 1,739,651, Hindus - 173054).
