The situation turned ugly in Hunsur area of Mysuru on Sunday afternoon when some people tried to break the police barricade during Hanuman Jayanti procession.
Police had given permission for the procession to pass through a specific route but some people tried to take another route. When police tried to stop them they started arguing and raising slogans.
Police tried to calm down the protesters and urged them to take the permitted route but protestors started pelting stones on police personnel and private vehicles. Police immediately swung into action and resorted to lathi-charge to bring the situation under control.
Police detained dozens of protestors including BJP MP Pratap Simha.
Simha was in Hunsur to participate in Hanuman Jayanti procession but was stopped before he could join the convoy which led to a heated argument between police and Simha’s supporters.
After a short while, Simha got into his car and hit the barricade, almost mowing down a few policemen in the process.
Ravi D Channannavar, Superintendent of Police Mysore said, “We had given the permission for the procession on a specific route, but today few people started diverting from the route. BJP MP Pratap Simha was also participating in the Hanuman Jayanti procession. We told him to follow the same route but he didn't listen. We tried our best to convince him but he was adamant and tried to take his car beyond the barricade. His car hit the barricade and we detained him.”
A case under section 279 of the IPC has been registered against Simha.
