BJP MP Kirron Kher on Wednesday stirred a controversy by her bizarre statement over the Chandigarh rape case in which a 22-year-old girl was brutally gang-raped by three men in a moving auto-rickshaw.
While speaking to reporters in her home constituency Chandigarh, the BJP MP said, “The victim should have not boarded the auto rickshaw when she saw three men sitting in it.â€
Kher’s statement didn’t go down well with the Opposition and other sections of the society. The Congress party accused the ruling party MP of taking a “serious issue†of women safety, lightly.
“I am amazed how she gave such a statement, It seems like a light take on a serious matter. She instead needed to tell how she is going to make Chandigarh a safer place for women,†Congress leader Pawan Kumar Bansal said.
Kirron Kher’s statement also offended a large section of women who took to twitter to criticize her for “censuring a woman rape victim.â€
See the attitude of the Lutyens elite of #BJP. A suit-boot ki sarkar will never understand what it feels like to be a woman stranded on a street & getting increasingly desperate with each passing minute because no public transport is in sight https://t.co/heYKEbmhNa #KirronKher— Anna MM Vetticad (@annavetticad) November 30, 2017
One Sleeja Raut, a twitter user said, going by Kirron Kher’s logic, the women should not leave their house. Another user Reema Roy said, “Tthese are our ministers, Instead of making the cities safe, they lecture women!! â€
However, Kher defended her statement and said that she has “only asked women to stay alert as the society now a days is not good and Politics should not be played here.â€
On November 27, a 22-year-old woman, hailing from Dehradun, was allegedly gang-raped by three men in a moving auto rickshaw.
The Chandigarh police have arrested all the three accused including the driver of the auto-rickshaw.
