The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP from Begusarai, Giriraj Singh on Tuesday said population control laws are necessary for the development of the country. Standing by Yoga guru Baba Ramdev, he said that his statement on population control should be seen in a positive light.
Ramdev on Sunday opined that India is not ready to deal with its population explosion and suggested some measures like denying voting rights and other government services to the third or higher children. Addressing a press conference Haridwar, he said the country’s population should not be allowed to go beyond 150 crore.
“This is only possible if we enact a legislation denying voting right to the third or higher children of a parent. Such children should also be denied right to contest elections and other government services,” he had suggested.
“India’s population should not be more than 150 crores in the next 50 years as we are not prepared or ready to bear more than that. This is only possible when the government makes a law that third child would not be allowed to vote, neither contest election nor he/she enjoys any type of privileges and facilities given by the government,” Ramdev had said.
AIMIM president Asaduddin Owaisi on Monday took a dig at Ramdev and said, “There is no law preventing people from saying downright unconstitutional things, but why do Ramdev’s ideas receive undue attention?”.
Criticising Ramdev over his Yoga poses, he further wrote, “That he can do a thing with his stomach or move about his legs shouldn’t mean Narendra Modi lose his right to vote just because he’s the 3rd kid”.
