At least 20 workers are feared injured following a series of explosions at the Khamaria ordnance factory on the outskirts of Jabalpur city on Saturday. Emergency services have been rushed to the blast site and efforts are on to rescue trapped workers.
District collector Mahesh Choudhary said that 25 fire tenders were pressed into service, and the blaze was put out by 9.30pm, three hours after it started. The explosions too have stopped, he added.
The fire started at around 6.20pm, when the factory workers had left, hence there were no casualties, said Choudhary, who visited the spot. Cause of the fire was yet to be ascertained, he said.
The blast occurred at the F-3 section where 125mm anti-tank grenades are manufactured. According to sources, people have heard at least 100 explosions at the factory.
Sources said that the accident occurred when some soft anti-tank explosives were being shifted at the factory. Most of the workers got injured during their bid to escape the factory. All the injured workers have been admitted to the Khamaria Army Hospital.
The ordnance factory has witnessed explosions in the 2002 and 2015 that left several factory workers injured.
