In a tragic incident, a boat carrying around 80 people capsized in the Jia Bharali river at Jamugurihat in Assam’s Sonitpur district. According to reports, some people managed to swim to safety, others were rescued by locals. However, several people are still reported to be missing. The boat was heading from Bihia Gaon near Lal Tapu to the Panch Mile area in Tezpur when the unfortunate incident took place. The locals travel to Panch Mile for shopping as a weekly market is set up on every Thursday.
“The boat capsized after developing a technical snag,” some reports quoted police sources as saying.
Sources said some passengers were rescued by locals while others managed to swim to the shore.
Meanwhile, rescue operations have been launched by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and district administration personnel.
