Jaitley has been unwell for the last two years.  Last year, he underwent a kidney transplant, following which he was put under isolation. He also had to skip the Vote on Account in February due to poor health.

Arun Jaitley served as the finance minister in the Narendra Modi government's first term in office but didn't fight the 2019 elections and refused to be a part of the government due to health reasons.

Though not in government, Jaitley has been vocal in backing all government decisions, be it Triple Talaq Bill or abrogation of Article 370. After government scrapped Article 370, Jaitley said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has created history with his clarity and determination on the Kashmir issue.
