Six dead after boat capsizes in Narmada river near Maharashtra's Nandurbar

These people had gone for boating as part of Makar Sankranti celebrations.

At least six people died and 34 were rescued after a boat carrying more than 60 capsized in the Narmada river near Bhushangaon village in Maharashtra's Nandurbar district on Tuesday. The district collector has confirmed that five persons are feared drowned. These people had gone for boating as part of Makar Sankranti celebrations. Villagers rushed to the aid of the victims and managed to bring back 39 victims, of whom six died. A massive search is on for several more still missing in the deep river waters, said Nandurbar Police Control official Balasaheb Gaidhani.

The deceased hailed from villages along the river in the tribal-dominated district in north Maharashtra, the police said. Prima facie, it appears that the incident occurred as the boat was carrying more number of people than its capacity, the police told news agency PTI.
