A SpiceJet plane overshot the runway at the Shirdi Airport in Maharashtra on Monday, hitting its operations, said the airline. All the passengers, however, had a providential escape, the source added. The number of passengers is not known immediately. The aircraft apparently touched down some 30-40 meters away from the landing spot and veered off the runway, the source explained.

The source also said the incident lead to a complete halting of operations at the airport that serves mostly the pilgrims visiting the popular Hindu shrine in the city.

Later, a SpiceJet spokesperson confirmed the incident. Passengers are being deplaned through the normal procedure, the spokesperson added.

Last year, an Air India Express flight overshot the runway due to slippery conditions at the Mumbai airport. There has been no reports of injuries so far.

Flight IX213 was flying into Mumbai from Maharashtra's Vijayawada and correctly landed on the Mumbai airport's alternate runway (the main runway was shut at the time of the landing). However, the even though maximum braking was used, the slippery conditions on the runway led to the plane coming to a halt 10 feet beyond the runway end.

There was no damage to the aircraft or airport property or injuries to any person was reported and the aircraft taxied on its own power to the parking bay, the spokesperson added. The reason for the poor slippery conditions of the runway will be investigated.
