‘Chhammak Chhallo’ is one of the most used words to describe a girl in Bollywood but in real life the usage of the word can land you in jail and fine up to Rs 1 lakh.

A Thane court has held that the usage of ‘Chhammak Challo’ to describe a woman amounts in insulting of the fairer sex’s modesty.

The judge said, “The words ‘chhammak challo’ are hindi words and there are no such word in English. The words are to be understood in the Indian society by their use.”

He added, “The two words generally amount to insulting of a woman, attracting section 509 of the IPC.”

The magistrate's court convicted a man for using the word ‘Chhamak Challo’ in 2009.

First class judicial magistrate RT Ingale found that the Ghodbunder Road resident guilty under section 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the Indian Penal Code.

According to police records, the accused and complainant resided on the fourth and fifth floors of the building. On January 9, 2009, the complainant and her husband were returning home after a morning walk.

While going towards their flat, the complainant’s leg touched the dustbin, and it fell. The accused got furious and shouted at the complainant and her husband. He addressed the complainant as 'chammak challo'.
