Distressed over shortage of funds for his daughter’s marriage, a 45-year-old Dalit man allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself at his residence here early this morning, police said.

Tribhovan Sumesara’s body was found hanging from a ceiling fan at his residence in Khodiyarnagar area near Aji GIDC.

“Sumesara’s son Ajay found his father’s body hanging from the ceiling fan early this morning and called up ‘108’ ambulance. However, the medical staff declared him dead,” Sub-Inspector S B Solanki said.

His relatives informed the police that Sumesara used to work as a casual labourer in the past. However, after suffering two heart attacks, he gave up working. His 21-year-old son Ajay works at a factory in GIDC area here.

Police investigation has revealed that Sumesara was depressed as he failed to arrange money for his daughter’s marriage next month.

“Sumesara had fixed his daughter’s marriage next month.  Due to his limited income, he requested his relatives to lend him some money. However, his relatives expressed inability, claiming that they only had Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes, which have been scrapped by government,” Solanki said.

“We believe that Sumesara might have committed suicide as he was worried about the fate of his daughter’s marriage after he failed to arrange cash to meet the wedding-related expenses,” Solanki said, adding that the body has been sent for postmortem and a probe is on.
