The CBI arrested a deputy commissioner of Income Tax (I-T), Jaipal Swamy in Mumbai in an alleged Rs 3 crore bribery case on Friday.As per reports, Swamy had asked the bribe from a businessman to grant favours during tax assessment.
Further, as per CBI spokesperson RK Gaur, two of his alleged accomplices, Prathmesh Masdekar and Kamlesh Shah have also been arrested in the case. CBI sources claim that Swamy had asked the complainant to hand over two cheques totaling Rs 3 crore to the jeweler, Kamlesh Shah.
The understanding was that Shah would later give Swamy gold jewelry worth Rs 3 crore, said a source.The CBI picked up Swamy from Aayakar Bhavan, the headquarters of the I-T department, at Churchgate on Friday evening.Swamy had been under the I-T vigilance radar for some time.
"We had received information that he had been demanding money but there was no complaint. A couple of chartered accountants had told us he was among the few officers who demanded bribes," said an income tax official.
