Celebratory firing: UP DGP directs strict action on duty lapse

Uttar Pradesh police chief Jaweed Ahmad has warned of disciplinary action against officials found lax in checking celebratory firing, which has led to casualties in the past.

“DGP has ordered strict implementation of directives issued by the courts. In case of death or injury due to celebratory firing, FIR should be lodged without waiting for a formal complaint,” IG (Law and Order) Bhagwan Swaroop told reporters.

The DGP he said, has directed that a case should be lodged under relevant section of the IPC and Arms Act and should not be watered down.

In case of firing with a licenced firearm, the Station House Officer or Station Officer concerned would be held accountable.

Swaroop said taking cognisance of such incidents, district police chief would take action against the SHO or SO concerned.

He said arms lincence would also be cancelled and the circle officer would have to ensure that it is done.

The IG said that SHO or SO would hold meeting with marriage hall, hotel and guest-house owners and create awareness among them.
