The River Ganga is considered to be sacred in Hindu mythology and eulogised as Goddess Ganga. However, people openly defecate and wash their dirty linen in the river. The Central Government however aims to enhance hygiene all over the country and is bullish on purifying Ganga. In orer to fulfill this objective, the Union Water Resources Ministry has released Rs 315 crore for constructing toilets along Ganga river.
The Ministry released the money to Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation for building toilets as per an action plan under Swachh Bharat campaign (Gramin) during 2016-17. The Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation Ministry had released Rs 263 crore for the purpose during the previous fiscal, an official statement said. "So far, 14,500 toilets have been constructed under this scheme," the statement reads.
