Joint security forces have gunned down a CPI-Maoist commander in an encounter in Chhattisgarh’s Dantewada district, police said on Thursday.
Dantewada Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) Gorakhnath Baghel told the media that the Naxal commander was killed in an encounter on Wednesday late hours.
“A anti-insurgency operation on intelligence inputs was launched by Special Task Force (STF) District Reserve Guard (DRG) in border areas of Dantewada and Bijapur districts on Wednesday afternoon in Dokapara forest under Kirandul police station jurisdiction,” added the ASP.
Baghel added that Maoist cadres on indiscriminately opened fire at the anti-insurgency team as they approached closer to the Naxal camp.
“Security forces retaliated to the Maoists with full force. Gun battle between Maoist and forces lasted for more than an hour,” said a DRG officer.
He added, “Maoist cadres taking benefit of dark and dense forest managed to escape. During search operation after the gunbattle they found a body of a Naxal cadre and .303 rifle from the encounter site.”
The killed Maoist was later identified as Naxal commander Ungami alias Chakraji. He led the Jan Militia of the left wing extremist outfit in the region.
