Senior advocate and BJP leader Subramanian Swamy on Monday launched a scathing attack on Congress and said the party committed “suicide” by moving the impeachment motion against Chief Justice of India (CJI) Deepak Misra.
Opposition parties, led by the Congress, had sought the removal of CJI Misra and given a notice of impeachment.
However, the notice was rejected by Vice President and Rajya Sabha Chairman Venkaiah Naidu citing "lack of substantial merit".
“He has decided correctly. He need not have taken two days to make the decision. It should've been considered null and void & thrown out from the beginning. Congress committed suicide by doing this,” said Swamy.
Rejecting the notice, Naidu said that the act of MPs discussing the conduct of the Chief Justice was against the propriety & parliamentary decorum as it denigrated the institution of CJI.

Justice (Retd) RS Sodhi termed the impeachment “ill-advised move” and said that it was not a wise act by the Grand Old Party.
“You know you don't have any ground, you know you can't impeach him. In spite of knowing all that still you go on & plunge in this ill-advised move. This can't be considered as a wise act,” said Sodhi.
The Congress, however, said that it was not a setback for it and the party will seek advice from the legal experts and take further decision.
"This is a really important matter. We don't know what the reason for the rejection was. Congress & other opposition parties will talk to some legal experts & take the next step," Congress leader PL Punia said.
