A constable was suspended after a video of him showering currency notes on a group of young schoolgirls went viral on social media. A senior Nagpur (rural) police official said the action was taken against constable Pramod Walke for the indiscipline which took place at a Republic Day cultural programme in a zila parishad school in Nand village in the district's Bhivapur taluka – Maharashtra.

"Nagpur Rural police Superintendent of Police Rakesh Ola has suspended constable Pramod Walke and has initiated a departmental inquiry," the official said.

The incident took place on January 26 when girls of Class 6 were presenting a cultural dance on a patriotic song on stage to mark the Republic Day celebrations. The constable, who was on duty inside the premises, was seen climbing onto the stage. He was seen showering currency notes on the girls. Some parents, present in the audience, shot the incident and soon it went viral on social media. Angry with the incident, parents started demanding action against the policeman for the alleged indiscretion and demeaning the students.

According to a report in IANS, the constable defended himself saying he had gone there for crowd control, when some people - impressed by the girls' performance - collected cash and requested him to go on stage and present it to them on their behalf.

"But after stepping on the stage, the constable made the moves which were found objectionable, though his body language did not suggest vulgarity," Vairagade told IANS.
