Coronavirus Live Updates: The lockdown imposed by the Narendra Modi government has come into force. The 21-day 'tough' curfew has made the 1.3 billion Indians practice social distancing. As the number of cases continues to rise, the government is looking to curb the viral spread with the help of the lockdown. For the first time in the history of independent India, services such as railways, airlines and road transport have come to a screeching halt. Except for essential services, no commercial activity is allowed across India. Visuals from various cities showed grocery stores implementing social distancing with the help of boxes made on the ground with chalk powder. Authorities have told the local law enforcers to make sure that no citizen ventures out without a valid reason. Despite the directions by the home ministry, several e-commerce websites have either curtailed or suspended their services. The government has repeatedly assured the people that there is no shortage of essential items and no one should indulge in panic buying. As the nation stays home to fight coronavirus, here are latest and verified updates related to COVID-19 disease and other developments:

Citing the 21-day national lockdown announced by India and tough measures by other countries, a top American daily has called for similar steps in the US to combat the coronavirus pandemic as authorities expressed alarm over the sharply-growing number of confirmed cases that has crossed the 50,000-mark.

With various political parties, community clubs and NGOs having to stop organising blood donation camps due to the lockdown imposed in the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, blood banks in West Bengal are facing an acute shortage of supply, officials said on Wednesday.

The latest samples of two coronavirus patients, taken after 14 days in isolation at a hospital Noida, were negative for COVID-19 and they could be discharged if the same result is seen in the final test to be done in two days, officials said on Wednesday. Gautam Buddh Nagar in Uttar Pradesh has so far recorded 11 positive cases of coronavirus, of which one person has already been discharged after treatment, district health officials said.

The curfew clamped in Punjab to check the spread of coronavirus was relaxed on Wednesday to let people buy essential commodities, officials said. In many parts of the state, the curfew was relaxed from 6 am to 9 am for buying milk, vegetables and fruits and then from 8 am to 11 am for purchasing groceries and medicines, they said.

Stock brokers and other personnel related to capital markets continued to face difficulties in commuting to their workplaces on Wednesday amid a 21-day nationwide lockdown to contain the spread of coronavirus outbreak. This comes despite Sebi's last evening notification that stock brokers and other capitals, debt market related entities will be exempted from such closures.
