Indian Railways announced suspension of all passenger operations till March 31 in wake of the Covid-19 outbreak in India on Sunday. No new trais are running on Sunday due to the Janata Curfew and the trains which are currently completing their journey will be terminated at their destination point. Only goods trains will run from March 22 midnight till March 31 midnight. A bare minimum level of service of suburban services of suburban trains and Kolkata Metro rail to continue up to midnight tonight.
"All passenger train services on Indian Railways including premium train services, mail/express trains, passenger trains, suburban trains, Kolkata Metro, Konkan Raiways, etc, will be cancelled toll March 31," the Railways said in a statement.
The local train services in Mumbai will also remain suspended from March 22 midnight to March 31 midnight. Nearly 80 lakh people use the suburban trains in Mumbai everyday, a Central Railway official said. Meanwhile, the death count in India due to the outbreak of novel coronavirus in the country has reached six. The sixth death was reported from Bihar where a 38-year-old man lost his life. In Mumbai, a 63-year-old patient lost his life in a private hospital. The Uttar Pradesh government has also suspended Noida Metro train services till March 31.
Indian Railways had earlier decided to cancel all passenger trains on today to support the Janta Curfew call given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In his address to the nation on Thursday, the prime minister urged people to observe 'Janata Curfew' on March 22 from 7:00 am to 9:00 pm. (With Agency Inputs)
