Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI(M)) workers vandalised and blackened the statue of Bhartiya Jana Sangh founder Syama Prasad Mukherjee in Kolkata's Kalighat area in West Bengal on Wednesday.
The incident comes after the statue of Periyar was vandalised by two BJP workers at a municipal corporation in Tamil Nadu’s Vellore on Tuesday evening. Earlier on Monday, the statue of Russian communist revolutionary Vladimir Lenin was razed in Tripura.

BJP National Secretary H Raja on Tuesday morning warned to pull down the statue of EVR Ramasamy, popularly known as Periyar, in a post on Facebook. He wrote, “Who is Lenin and what is the connection between Lenin and India? What connection has India with Communists? Lenin's statue has been removed in Tripura. Today it is Lenin's statue in Tripura, tomorrow it will be the statue of caste fanatic EVR Ramasamy.”

Along with the warning, he also put up a video of the statue being razed down by bulldozer.
DMK working president MK Stalin reacted to Raja’s post and demanded his arrest under the Goondas Act, saying, “He has been trying to incite violence since long. Nobody can touch or has right to touch Periyar’s statue.”
BJP, however, sidelined itself from the controversy saying, “We do not support any kind of violence.”
