A criminal case has been registered against Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi in Muzaffarpur CJM Court for her tweet on the recent judgment in 2017 Pehlu Khan lynching case. According to news agency ANI, the case has been filed by a local advocate named Sudhir Ojha.

On Wednesday, an Alwar court acquitted all six accused in the lynching of Pehlu Khan in 2017 on suspicion of being a cow smuggler. Khan, a dairy farmer, was transporting her cows when a Hindu mob stopped his vehicle and beat him black and blue. He succumbed to injuries during the treatment.

The lynching of the innocent man had triggered nationwide outrage with people slamming the then BJP-led Rajasthan government for being soft on Hindu fanatics. The court’s acquittal was shocking to many, including Priyanka Gandhi, as the entire incident was caught on camera and the video of the incident was available in the public domain.

"The lower court decision in the Pehlu Khan case is shocking. There should be no place for inhumaneness in our country and the murder by a mob is a heinous crime," Priyanka had said in a tweet in Hindi.

The Congress leader also lauded the Rajasthan government for bringing a law on mob lynching and exuded confidence that the Ashok Gehlot-led state government will set a good example by helping Khan get justice.

"The Rajasthan government's initiative to enact a law against mob killing is commendable. It is hoped that it will set a good example in getting justice in the Pehlu Khan case," she said in another tweet.
