Cyclone Ockhi claims 5 lives in Tamil Nadu, Kerala; likely to turn severe

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday issued cyclone alert for South Kerala, adjoining districts of south Tamil Nadu and Lakshadweep Islands. The heavy rains have so far claimed four lives in Tamil Nadu and one in Kerala.

The deep depression which had formed in the Bay of Bengal on Wednesday has now intensified into a cyclonic storm named ‘Ockhi’.

Moreover, the MeT department has predicted that ‘Ockhi’ can turn severe in the next 24 hours.

The authorities have issued warning asking people to remain indoors, while educational institutions have also been shut down as a precautionary measure.

The Skymet Weather‏ has warned heavy rains in the first week of December. “The first week of December will kick start with extremely heavy rains for Southern Peninsular India,” it said.
